Historical Origins and Mystical Significance
The book, known as Raziel HaMalach, is a foundational text of both theoretical and practical Kabbalah. It is traditionally attributed to Adam HaRishon (the first man), to whom the angel Raziel revealed its secrets. According to tradition, Adam passed it to Noah, Shem, Abraham, and later to Moses. Eventually, King Solomon received the Sefer Razim (Book of Secrets), considered the most precious among the books of wisdom.
This attribution is supported by the Talmud, which references the “Book of Adam” (Bava Metzia 85b). The book was also known to medieval commentators, such as Abraham Ibn Ezra, who wrote:
“In the Book of Raziel, one who wishes to perform She’eilat Chalom (a method of receiving divine dreams) should recite the verse ‘And it was in the thirtieth year…’ at the beginning of the night, as it contains 72 letters.”
However, different versions of the text have emerged over time, with additions and omissions that distinguish later manuscripts from earlier ones.
Powers and Segulot
The book is regarded as a powerful segulah for protection, divine blessing, and health. It is often kept in homes or near newborns for safeguarding against harm and spiritual elevation.
